With three-dozen recordings as a leader/co-leader, and numerous awards including a 2003 Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, a 2016 Doris Duke Artist Award and being awarded Jazz Pianist of the Year in 2011 and 2016 by The Jazz Journalists Association, Hersch is among the most admired of contemporary jazz musicians, having collaborated with an astonishing rage of instrumentalists and vocalists throughout worlds of jazz (including Joe Henderson, Art Farmer, Charlie Haden, Art Farmer, Stan Getz and Bill Frisell); classical (Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, Christopher O'Riley); and Broadway (Audra McDonald). Hersch has been an obvious influence on a new generation of pianists including former Hersch students Brad Mehldau an Ethan Iverson (of The Bad Plus) and remains an in-demand collaborator with other noted bandleaders and vocalists.
Fred is joined on the night by John Hébert and Eric McPherson for a special afternoon of music for the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival.
John Hébert, bassist, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana where he attended Loyola University of New Orleans on a full scholarship. After two years of performing with many of New Orleans greatest musicians and performing at various clubs including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival he moved to the New York are in 1993 and has established himself as a highly sought-after bassist. He has worked along side world famous artists such as Andrew Hill, Lee Konitz, Paul Bley, John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, Joe Maneri, Mary Halvorson, Tomasz Stanko, Benoit Delbecq, David Liebman, Uri Caine, Greg Osby, and many others.
Drummer Eric McPherson is a New York City native and is widely known for his deep roots in the jazz drum tradition as well as his innovative style. He was a long-time member of the Jackie McLean Quartet and has appeared with numerous well-known bandleaders and ensembles including holing the drum chair in Andrew Hill’s last trio. He is on the Jazz Studies Faculty of the Hartt School of Music in Hartford CT and has mentored many of the greatest young drummers on the scene.
T.S. Monk:
T. S. and his legendary father, Thelonious Monk, recorded only once together - live. We will release that Event in the coming year, as T. S. and his hard-swinging, sizzling sextet, will once again tour clubs, festivals and performing arts venues both nationally and internationally!
T. S. Monk - Drummer, composer, record company founder, band-leader, vocalist, and more! Monk has received the New York Jazz Awards First Annual “Recording of the Year” award and Downbeat’s prestigious 63rd annual Album of the Year Reader’s Choice Award for the “Monk on Monk” tribute album to his father. “Monk On Monk” featured over twenty guest artists including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Arturo Sandoval, and Nnenna Freelon.
Keeping the legacy of his legendary father Thelonious Monk alive, T. S. Monk prepares to launch the Thelonious Monk Festival, highlighting jazz and including the genres influencing – and influenced by - this great music. Critics and audiences laud T. S. Monk as his father’s true musical heir, as band leader, and performer. He founded the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz which has not only brought great jazz talents to the fore but has proven to be the leading jazz institute world-wide. Clinics, master classes, and workshops continue to be part of T. S.’ tour activities!
